Useful/suggested settings changes

http://astro-forum.utenforuio.no/index.php?action=profile;area=account

- Show others your online status or not?
- Consider adding secret question/answer for password recovery

http://astro-forum.utenforuio.no/index.php?action=profile;area=forumprofile

- Add a personalized picture (uploads must be 64x64 pixels or smaller)?
- Add a catchy signature?

- Show board descriptions inside boards
- Show child boards on every page
- Use sidebar menus instead of dropdown menus when possible
- Show most recent posts at the top (like most email readers do)

- Topics per page: 50
- Messages per page: 50

http://astro-forum.utenforuio.no/index.php?action=profile;area=notification

- Turn notification on when you post/reply
- Turn on "When sending notifications... email..."

https://astro-forum.utenforuio.no/index.php?action=profile;area=ignoreboards

- Ignoring certain boards is very useful now that we have several/many courses on the forum!
- NOTE: You must actively subscribe to individual boards be notified of e.g. new topics, you cannot subscribe to a category :(

- Display personal messages as a conversation
- Show most recent personal messages at the top
- Show a popup when I receive new messages
- Save a copy of each personal message in my sent items
NOTE: It's also useful to add oneself to the recipient list every single time you send a PM, to be able to see the whole conversation in context in your inbox.
Yes, you have to add yourself for every message/reply, even when you do "reply all". If anyone finds a way to automate this, there's a reward!

Various tips on how to use the forum (please suggest more!)
- Check out the options under "Attachments and other options" - attached images will be shown
- To get in-line images/plots etc., make them available through a URL* and use the button below the boldface button
- For LaTeX on separate line(s) use $ $ <latex> $ $ (but without spaces between the dollar signs)
- For inline LaTeX use \ ( <latex> \ ) (without spaces between \ and the parentheses)
- The rightmost button with the mouse cursor inside red brackets switches on/off WYSIWYG editing mode
- Below your login/display name in the upper left corner, there are two useful links: show new posts & show new replies to your posts
- Look for action buttons both above and below... sorry, it can be confusing, we did not do this ourselves
- Hover over most buttons to get an idea of what they do. Or just press them, as long as you're in the playground/testing area :)
- When sending a PM, add yourself to the recipient list, so you can see your own messages in the same thread
- Under Profile->Modify->Ignore Boards Options you can select boards to ignore
- Experiment! (In the playground/testing board: http://astro-forum.utenforuio.no/index.php?board=4.0)!
- Feel free to suggest other tips!

Now, go ahead and ask your professor that question! :)

*) To make files available through a URL, on https://folk.universitetetioslo.no/<username>/...:

Mount smb://privateweb.uio.no/folk (press Cmd-K on Macs - laptops only). Then put stuff in /Volumes/folk... voilá!

LaTeX examples (I have simply removed the spaces in the control sequences shown above)

- For LaTeX on separate line(s) use $$ \frac{1}{2} $$ (but without spaces between the dollar signs)
- For inline LaTeX use \( \frac{1}{2} \) (without spaces between \ and the parentheses)

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
